The Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC) is the state agency responsible for coordinating and overseeing higher education in Maryland. Established in 1971, MHEC's mission is to promote access to and success in postsecondary education for all Maryland residents. The agency works to ensure that higher education institutions in the state are effectively serving students and meeting the educational needs of the community. MHEC also administers various financial aid programs and oversees the approval of new academic programs and institutions in Maryland.
